(Un)Lucky number seven?

So here we are, with the #7 pick. At this point, so much is unclear that I can’t get a grip on who we will select. The #6 pick would give us so much more breathing room, but of course D’antoni & Co. beat us out on that. OK, so here are the realistic choices:

Eric Gordon – It seems most mock drafts have him sliding to #7, but what he has done at the combine and pre-draft workouts might rise his stock once again. It was not too long ago that he was considered a top 3 talent, and he might live it up to it in the coming weeks.

Russell Westbrook – Westbrook would be a nice addition, he has cemented his status as quite possibly the most athletic player in this draft, certainly at the guard position. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we ended up with him.

DJ Augustin – Would be quite a reach at #7, but wouldn’t mind the possibility of trading down to nab him. He’s a pure PG who can score, and we need that in the worst way.

Unrealistic choices

OJ Mayo – I can’t figure out why more than a handful of mock drafts have us selecting him. At this point, it almost seems impossible. But for all the dreamers, this would be the icing on the cake.

Jerryd Bayless – Another slight possibility. For this to happen, the teams ahead of us would have to get big man happy and draft Love, Lopez, Randolph. If all of those guys get drafted ahead of us, Mayo or Bayless will fall into our laps.

Ideally, if Eric Gordon is off the board, I propose we trade our #7 and #35 for the Nets’ #10 and #21. Essentially, we can nab Westbrook and Douglas-Roberts/Courtney Lee. Our backcourt would be set. And I haven’t even begun to talk about Maggette. Till next time…
